WALKER - The talk of town in Walker is all about the new football turf being installed at Walker High School.

Walker football coach Brandon Lawley says the bright green turf caught the eye of most students Monday morning.

"It's the buzz in the air between the players, students and everybody talking about it just finally seeing the end of it," he said. "They've done a great job, but finally seeing the turf actually go down is pretty nice."

The nearly $2 million upgrade will bring Walker High up-to-date with other schools in the parish like Live Oak and Denham Springs. However, instead of the typical rubber pellets found inside turf fields, Walker High plans to use a coconut fiber to keep the turf's temperature cooler.

"Literally during those summer days if you stand in the same spot long enough you can start to feel the soles of your shoes start to melt. You can almost smell that rubber melting, but that coconut is supposed to keep it 40 to 50 degrees cooler," said Lawley.

Coaches say the new field will help to change the culture for student-athletes at Walker High. The field should be ready for the school's jamboree on August 28.
