BATON ROUGE – A new human case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed in Louisiana, this time in Ascension Parish.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals said the case is also the most severe form of West Nile infection, called neuroinvasive. It typically results in a swelling of the brain or spinal cord, and can lead to brain damage or death.

This brings the state’s total cases of recorded West Nile infection in humans to 32.

More information about preventing infection from the West Nile Virus, which is passed by mosquitoes, can be found on DHH’s website.
