New business corridor opens in New Roads
NEW ROADS - It's been open less than a day, but Memorial Boulevard in New Roads is already the talk of the town.
"It should have been here a long time ago," one New Roads resident told News 2.
The road is just a few miles long, and includes the city's first and only Walmart Supercenter. It's something many who live around here say they've needed for a long time.
"It was pretty hectic because I live in New Roads so I would have to drive all the way across the river to Zachary just to go to the store. And then I'd go all the way back home just to get the items that I didn't have," says Alexis Taylor.
City leaders say they expect even more businesses to build along the corridor, and anticipate it will bring in millions of dollars to the city in sales and property taxes.
"It didn't happen overnight. We planned it. It's a boulevard, it's kind of a big city kind of look and feel," says Mayor Robert Myer.
So far the Walmart Supercenter has brought more than 200 jobs to New Roads.
