BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. - A ceremony Wednesday will mark the opening of Bay St. Louis' new $19 million seawall, which should give much better protection from storms than the one that was there before Hurricane Katrina's surge flooded into the city in 2005.

The completion of the work, which began in November 2010, will also allow businesses to reopen on the beach side of Beach Boulevard.

Following the land's contour, the improved seawall will be about 21 feet tall in some spots -- much taller than the pre-Katrina 8-foot seawall. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and state and city officials will host the ribbon-cutting.

Mayor Les Fillingame says the project marks the completion of a major piece of the recovery.
