New all-female krewe to roll in Metairie
GRETNA, La. - The Jefferson Parish Council has given permission to the new all-female Krewe of Athena to roll in Metairie during the 2015 Mardi Gras season.
Athena spokeswoman Chelsie McCormick says the krewe hopes to roll on the season's first Friday. Exact dates and times will be announced later.
President and krewe captain Taisha Williams-Payne, assistant principal at L.B. Landry-O. Perry Walker High School, says the krewe is making history. She says her research shows there has been no other krewe led predominantly by African-American women in Jefferson Parish.
She says Athena is in the process of applying for a parade permit. It's also seeking members, who are limited to women age 21 and over. Dues are $550 per year.
