Neighbors worried wanted man is hiding in woods, feet from houses
BATON ROUGE- Sunday night, people kept eyes on the dark woods behind their homes on Riverside Park Drive since a convict is likely lurking in the shadows.
Dennis Shampine's run from the law has lasted through the weekend and approaches the one week mark since he bolted from police who were tracking him down in Walker last Tuesday. Shampine, who is considered dangerous, has managed to stay one step ahead of the slew of authorities who have been trailing him.
"Acres of wood, ya know, but ya still have lots of means to survive. So, yea, the cops had a hard time getting through," Jamie Lafrance said. Lafrance spent the weekend on edge since she believes Shampine is surviving in the woods behind her house.
"I want him caught," she said.
Shampine has charges of battery, robbery and is a sex offender who has failed to register. Police said he beat someone into a coma.
Anyone who may see him is asked to call 911.
