Neighbors: pig waste causing foul odor
PRAIRIEVILLE - Something raunchy is spewing into a creek in Ascension Parish, turning the water brown and possibly making people sick.
Neighbors near Elmo Cannon Road say livestock feces is to blame but no one can say officially.
"We can't dump raw sewer into the ditch. He shouldn't be allowed to dump that stuff into the ditch," angry neighbor Pete Dupuy said.
He's convinced pig waste is draining into a ditch at the back of the farm causing a smell.
"It made me sick made the neighbors sick just from the smell itself. It's a bit ridiculous," another neighbor Ricky said.
He did not want to give his full name because he did not want to start trouble with the farmer.
But Ricky blames the smell on pig waste too, and he's worried about kids who play in the ditch.
"It could be a little hazardous downstream for some folks," Ricky said.
The color of the water changes at the farm.
While the community holds him responsible, the farmer does not see it that way.
The farmer declined to go on camera, but he did say what was coming from his farm was pig feed and not pig waste.
He also said he never goes to the back of his property so he didn't know about it.
The farmer claimed he's been cleared by the parish and the sanitation department.
The parish sewer and water did not return WBRZ News 2's call for comment.
