Neighbors near St. Gabriel apartment fire upset with city leaders
ST. GABRIEL- People who live near an under-construction apartment complex that caught fire Friday say they warned the city about dangers like this.
The complex, which had five, four-plex buildings already built, started going up in the Fall. Neighbors say they asked the city to reconsider approving the project because they felt the buildings were planned too close to homes.
Investigators say the fire started in one of the buildings, after contractors left for the day. Surveillance video showed welding work before they left, and then flames growing over time because of high winds. Investigators believe the work area still had hot embers, that were fueled by the wind.
Neighbors say the fire sent smoke into nearby homes, but fire officials say quick work by firefighters prevented worse.
The investigation is still on-going.
