BATON ROUGE - Some residents in the Melrose East area strongly oppose a proposed bar. A vacant grocery store on the corner of Florida Blvd. and North Donmoor Ave. has caused quite the controversy.

Signs saying, "no bar" like nearby apartment complexes as neighbors say this is just the beginning of their fight. They claim former Metro Council Member Byron Sharper is one of the investors that wants to rebuild the old Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store into a large bar room.

Carol Thornton has lived in Melrose East for years and thinks a bar will bring back the crime ridden crowd of old.

"A lot of drugs, alcohol, fights, shootings, a lot of problems we don't need in the community right now," Thornton said.

Inside the old grocery store, what looks like a stage and lighting has been built. The property is zoned as heavy commercial, and investors wish to change that to Commercial Alcoholic Beverage 2, which would allow the sale of alcohol pending a permit.

The East Baton Rouge Planning and Zoning Commission plans to take up the zoning change at tonight's meeting.

We called multiple numbers for Byron Sharper, left messages and went to listed address, and he was unavailable when our deadlines hit.
