ST. GABRIEL -  A landowner in Iberville Parish has filed an application to rezone nearly 2,000 acres of land now used primarily for agriculture.

The landowner is asking to change the property from residential to heavy industrial.  The land, located between River Road and La. 30 has the attention of people who don't want to see it turning into a site for industrial use.

"These plants need to go somewhere else," said Tyrone Williams. "We know that if one comes in that our quality of air will not be as good and also the quality of life and the traffic situation will be much worsened."

Within St. Gabriel city limits is University Club South and right across the street from the subdivision is the land in question.

"We don't want to have those hazards next door to us," said UCS Homeowner's Association President Mike Smith.

Mayor Lionel Johnson tells WBRZ News 2, the city is split 50-50 on the issue and while the property is up for rezoning he does not know of any immediate plans to turn the property into a factory or plant.

The issue will be brought up at the planning and zoning meeting Wednesday and then at the city council meeting Thursday at 6 p.m.
