BATON ROUGE – The city is set to receive a sizable reimbursement for overtime costs associated with the need for extra law enforcement related to protests of the shooting death of Alton Sterling and the manpower needs following a deadly ambush of officers on Airline Highway this summer.

At a Metro Council meeting Wednesday, the governing body of the city-parish is expected to rubber-stamp accepting $929,000 from the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement's emergency fund. The nearly $1 million payment will be used to off-set the unplanned overtime needs.

Included in the overtime costs are the hours worked when Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Loretta Lynch attended a public memorial for the slain officers.

The total cost of the significant law enforcement needs for the two situations in July total more than $3 million. Overtime associated with the situations in July do not include any overtime related to the flood, which happened almost a month after the attack on the officers on Airline Highway.

In a report for New Orleans' internet news site, NOLA.com, finance officers at each agency involved reported city police spent $1.5 million on overtime, the sheriff's office spent $100,000 and State Police spent $1.6 million.

BRPD officers worked some 37,000 hours of overtime, NOLA.com reported. State Police worked 33,300 and the sheriff's office overtime hours amounted to about 2,600.

Congressman Garret Graves reported he was able to secure funding from the Department of Justice for help covering costs.  The federal government supplied $650,000 to help local law enforcement.
