A congressman compared the National Collegiate Athletic Association to the mafia over how it controls the lives of student athletes. Democrat Bobby Rush of Illinois made the accusation at a forum on college sports looking at the impact of "back-room deals, payoffs and scandals." Rush said "I think you would compare the NCAA to Al Capone and to the Mafia." He made the comment after hearing from mothers of student athletes who complained of ill treatment by schools after their sons suffered sports injuries. The NCAA didn't respond to the accusation.
