BAYOU CORNE - Natural gas bubbles have started turning up in the yards of people living close to the Bayou Corne sinkhole.

DEQ confirmed that the bubbles are caused by the same natural gas found under the sinkhole. They told News 2 the levels of gas are not flammable, and will not ignite.

"This is one of I think 35 bubbling sites from around the area," said John Boudreaux with Assumption Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness.

These latest bubbles, located in Belle Rose, are the closest to actual homes. People living in the area say they don't know whether or not to stay in their homes, and seeing the bubbles only makes that decision harder.

"I don't know what's going to happen, if I'm going to have to relocate or what," said Belle Rose resident Gerald Merrit.

Updates on the sinkhole can be found on the Assumption Parish Police Jury's website.
