National Signing Day off and roaring
BATON ROUGE - LSU is picking up strong recruits for National Signing Day, but the day is still young and already producing some surprises.
University High running back Nick Brossette signed with the Tigers after flirting with Texas. He led UHigh to the state title in 2014 and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship game.
In Mississippi, four-star linebacker Leo Lewis of Brookhaven chose Mississippi State over LSU. Lewis, considered one of the top linebackers in the nation, had bounced between commitments to Ole Miss and Alabama before coming down to a choice between the Bulldogs and the Tigers.
Several other high schoolers in the Baton Rouge area were signing outside the SEC, with teams such as Yale, Cornell, Rice and Air Force.
LSU's Signing Day tracker has 23 commitments 1 p.m. and has the 5th-ranked recruiting class in the nation according to 247Sports. Southern University hopes to sign more than 20 according to Head Coach Dawson Odums.
