FARGO, N.D.- North Dakota's flagship university has dropped its contentious Fighting Sioux nickname. School officials are hoping this time it'll finally stick.

The move became official when the state Board of Higher Education voted to get rid of the University of North Dakota's moniker and Indian head logo. They had sparked lawsuits and threats of NCAA sanctions.

State residents cast ballots Tuesday in numbers not seen in a primary election for more than five decades. More than two-thirds favored putting the decades-old dispute to rest by dumping the name.

The issue has split the state, sports fans and even tribes. Twice before the nickname had been retired and unretired.

Supporters say they'll try to revive it again in the November election with a referendum to mandate the nickname under the state constitution.
