BATON ROUGE - A Baton Rouge family is searching for answers after suffering the loss of a mother and her unborn child.

Brittney Mills was killed in April 2015. She was pregnant at the time of her death. She was killed on her door step. Investigators still have no suspects. Her mother, Barbara Johnson Mills, opened up to WBRZ News 2 for the first time Thursday, talking about her daughter's death and an investigation with questions that could be answered with Brittney's cell phone.

The iPhone is locked, and can't be accessed by investigators. Its the same type of situation the FBI is dealing with in the San Bernardino shooting. Mills said she thinks Apple's uncooperative attitude in the investigation is putting the investigation on hold.

"I think Apple is being naive in some sense because they say they're putting everyone at risk, but what about the people who have already been affected by that? The families that have already been affected by that. My daughter and granddaughter are deceased and I'm sure she would want me to do whatever I could do find out who did this to her," Mills said.

District Attorney Hillar Moore shares the same opinion as Mills. He said if they could just get into Brittney's phone, they could have a break in the case.

"People like Ms. Mills and her family can't possibly get some closure because we can't get into that to get into the next lead. Also to be cautious, we'll never know what is on the phone. There may be nothing there, but we'll never know until we get into it," Moore said.

Investigators think Brittney Mills was killed by someone she knew.  The case received national attention this week after the FBI's call to have the suspects phones in the San Bernardino shooting unlocked.
