Mosquito fight more difficult in winter

DENHAM SPRINGS - Workers fighting the bite of mosquitoes in Livingston Parish are changing their tactics.

The window to spray for mosquitoes has changed to from 4:30 p.m. until about 8:00 p.m. That's because sunset is around 5:04 p.m. this week.

Livingston Parish Mosquito Abatement Director Jeanine Tessmel says evening spraying is the most effective method. Tessmel says there are also challenges caused by the early sunset, since her drivers are part-time and most have day jobs.

Traffic is a factor as well, both getting drivers from their other jobs to the mosquito abatment office, then out to reach one of the 47 spray zones within the parish.

Tessmel says the number of drivers she has available normally drops from seven to about five during the winter.
