BATON ROUGE- Each week the East Baton Rouge Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control pulls mosquito samples, and sends them off to be tested for West Nile Virus. Recent results show that the number of mosquitoes carrying the virus is increasing by the week.

"We're working overtime," said Randy Vaeth with the agency. "In fact we're actually working on Saturdays trying to address the mosquitoes and the West Nile Virus activity in the parish."

Vaeth said they're also running spray trucks six nights a week, and this week pulled out their aerial spray plane for the first time this year to hit areas that are thick with mosquitoes.

"They can cover more than 10,000 acres in one night, so that's really a great asset to the program," says Vaeth.

Resident Danielle Harris says she knows mosquitoes are a problem in southeast Louisiana, and is worried about what they're capable of doing.  But when she sees the plane flying over, she knows relief will soon follow.

"It's a good idea, it will be good for the community, and it's a good way to be able to cover more area," she said.
