MONROE-Water thieves beware. Monroe is arresting those who tamper with their water meters.
Police chief Quentin Holmes says since January, nine arrests have been made, with arrest warrants issued for three others.
Zachary Simmons, supervisor for the city's Utility Billing Division, says the city is now taking extra measures to disconnect delinquent water accounts.
An audit report recently released showed many customers whose accounts were past due were still receiving water services. City officials said it was because there were so many delinquent accounts it was impossible sometimes to disconnect all that needed to be cut off.
The audit also noted some residents took it upon themselves to turn their water back on when their accounts had been disconnected.
