More signs of balance between SEC East and West

BATON ROUGE - The blazing starts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina are raising doubts about preseason assumptions that the West is best in the Southeastern Conference.

No. 1 Alabama and No. 3 LSU, the leaders of the West Division, also remain the league's top teams in the national rankings. But the next few weeks will clarify the extent to which the SEC's balance of power has begun shifting eastward.

LSU travels to No. 11 Florida on Oct. 6 and hosts No. 6 South Carolina on Oct. 13.

The leaders in the East have been winning with dominant defenses and powerful running games, a formula familiar to Alabama and LSU.

Georgia coach Mark Richt says it now looks like his fifth-ranked Bulldogs will have a tougher road in the East than many thought.
