More people paying fines ahead of jail re-opening
BATON ROUGE - Court workers in Baton Rouge saw an increase in people coming in to pay off misdemeanor tickets today, after word got out that people with outstanding fines would be arrested starting next week.
The city court reported that by 3 p.m. today, 2,218 people had come through to pay fines and get warrants against them cleared.
They normally see 1,200 to 1,400 people paying fines on a daily basis.
Starting Monday, people with outstanding misdemeanor warrants that are stopped by police will be arrested and taken to the city jail. The operation is part of an effort to clear outstanding warrants from law enforcement databases.
News 2's Adrian Pittman will have more on the operation and how you can find out if you have outstanding fines tonight at 6 p.m.
