State education officials say more of Louisiana's fourth- and eighth-graders have advanced to the next grade after passing the state's high-stakes LEAP test.

Students take the LEAP test to measure abilities in English, math, science and social studies, but performance in the English and math portions determine whether they pass.

The Louisiana Department of Education, in a news release late Friday, said based on combined results from spring and summer testing, the percentage of fourth graders earning promotion to the next grade rose from 83 percent in 2009 to 86 percent this year.

The percentage of eighth graders earning promotion rose slightly, from 79 percent to 80 percent.

Collectively, the percentage of students in both grades grew from 81.4 percent in 2009 to 83.2 percent in 2010.

Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek says more than 9,400 fourth- and eighth-grade students earned promotions.
