Federal authorities announced more than $25 million in new projects for the rebuilding or replacement of property damaged five years ago by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, including $11 million to rebuild a student center at Xavier University in New Orleans.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Craig Fugate made the announcements in a telephone news conference Tuesday morning.

Fugate said other projects include more than $5 million for the Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans for an assisted living complex and for classroom repairs; $5 million for sewer system repairs in St. Bernard Parish and millions more for other projects in St. Tammany, Jefferson and Cameron parishes, and Hancock County, Miss.
