The Monterrey Blvd Bridge in Baton Rouge is closed and drivers want to know why. Its been shut down for about a week. People we spoke to say the closure came without warning.
A state inspection last weekend deemed the bridge critically deficient which mandated its immediate closure. DPW says the timber poles that support the bridge are severely damaged. They say they're not strong enough to carry the load.
DPW crews will be out next week repairing what they can. In the meantime drivers are having to find another route. Some drivers even got lost.
"I was just passing through trying to get to Choctaw and saw the bridge closed and now I have to go around. I don't know where to go. I don't know this area," said Denise Truvillion.
The two span bridges connect Florida Blvd to South Choctaw. More than 12,000 people travel the road daily.
DPW crews will begin work Monday. The bridge should be reopened in two weeks.
