Monks, caskets win!
COVINGTON- Monks at the abbey here will be able to make and sell their plain, low-cost caskets since the U.S. Supreme Court won't hear an appeal filed by the Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors.
The state board sued, claiming St. Joseph Abbey was not licensed to sell them. When multiple courts ruled against them, the group took the issue to the highest court, which said this week it was not hearing the appeal.
A district judge and the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had ruled that there were no reasonable grounds for a regulation that only state-licensed funeral directors may sell coffins in Louisiana.
