Mom sent to mental hospital instead of prison
BATON ROUGE- A mother from Zachary who left her baby in a ditch in April of 2012 will go to a state mental hospital for nearly 40 years instead of prison.
Judge Chip Moore found Sabrina Maiden not guilty by reason of insanity Thursday. Last year, at least three different doctors said she did not know the difference between right and wrong at the time her son died.
Investigators said Maiden dropped her two-month-old, Prince Javion Brown, in a ditch across the street from her home while she was naked in April of 2012. She then went and attacked a man near the house.
"These doctors went into a lot of detail and came up with the same conclusion," District Attorney Hillar Moore said. "That's somewhat rare. Obviously, she did not know right from wrong when this occurred."
Maiden's defense lawyer, Margaret Lagattuta said it has been difficult trying to communicate with her client.
"She has her issues," Lagattuta said. "She's delusional, she's a paranoid schizophrenic, she has a family history of that."
For the past six months, Lagattuta said Maiden has been heavily medicated to get her "right" for trial, but nothing worked.
"She knows the baby's dead," Lagattuta said. "Part of this weird psychosis was the baby was the reincarnation of Alea who was her God. It's really delusional, she's out there."
Maiden is scheduled to appear back in court this summer. She will undergo an evaluation that determines if she's a harm to herself or others.
