BATON ROUGE - A woman in trouble with the law for the truancy of her kids defied authorities again Thursday.

Kenyetta Criss is wanted for allowing her kids to miss a combined 137 days of school.

She was suppose to meet with East Baton Rouge truancy administrators but skipped the meeting. Criss did go to the center but sat in a car in the parking lot while someone attended the meeting on her behalf.

She refused to speak with administrators directly.

A day before the meeting, she told WBRZ News 2 she kept her children home because she was in an abusive relationship and is currently at a battered woman's shelter.

But, even away from the alleged abuse, her kids are still skipping class, Family and Youth Service Center Director Roxson Welch said.

"[They missed] six days during the past several weeks and some of those days were ice days," Welch said.

Criss also said a third child, her 13-year-old son, never misses a day of school while truancy records show differently.

"She said that the oldest child has not had any trouble. Well, we pulled the records today and the problems have continued. And the older child has missed 50 days of school," Welch said.
