BATON ROUGE - A crash on O'Neal Lane led to the arrest of a Baton Rouge mom who was 4.5 times over the legal blood alcohol limit, according to court records.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Cynthia Beuerle for careless operation and DWI just after she'd picked her child up from St. Jean Vianney School on Oct. 17.

Court records show she blew a .366 when she was given a breath test. The legal alcohol limit is .08.

Susan Shea told News 2 she was in the carpool lane when she saw someone driving erratically. She didn't think twice about it until she began driving home.

"I looked in my rearview mirror, and she (Beuerle) was coming at me at an accelerated rate of speed, and I realized I needed to get out of the way, or I would be hit," Shea said.

Shea immediately made an emergency maneuver in her van.

"There were three seventh-grade boys in my car, and I said I'm so sorry I had to do that," Shea said.  "Just as I apologized to them for how I operated my vehicle, we look and we see the Suburban hit another carpool mom."

Shea snapped a picture of the wreck with her phone.  She also called school leaders and set up a meeting to discuss the issue, but said they told her it was none of her business.

"We could have gone into the creek, seriously hurt or killed, and that's the part that scares me," Shea said.

News 2 checked with school leaders and the Diocese of Baton Rouge. A spokeswoman said procedures are in place to protect students. They urge people to report anything suspicious in carpool lanes to administrators.

Shea doesn't think that's enough.

"There are people in the school community that have that role," Shea said. "They need to be trained.  Trained if something isn't going right to see what can be done to help the situation."

News 2 spoke to Beuerle by phone. She had no comment about the wreck or arrest.
