PORT ALLEN - Attempts by defense attorneys to end a murder-for-hire trial in West Baton Rouge Parish failed today.

Judge Robin Free rejected motions for a mistrial filed by defense attorneys in the murder trial of Monique Kitts and Karl Howard in Port Allen. The attorneys claimed multiple times that prosecutors made improper comments to the jury during questioning.

The two face second-degree murder charges for the death of Kitts' husband, Corey Kitts. Prosecutors accused Monique Kitts of hiring Howard to kill her husband in order to collect a half-million dollar life insurance policy.

Testimony wrapped up early Friday afternoon following jurors listening to the 911 call placed when Monique Kitts and her daughter found Corey Kitts dead.  The trial will continue next week.
