BATON ROUGE - Louisiana State Police released the name of a man who witnesses said fired a gun wildly from his car before charging into an Exxon plant in the north of part of East Baton Rouge Parish Friday.

Trooper Jared Sandifer said 28-year-old Telvin Henyard of Woodville, Miss. faces charges of attempted carjacking, illegal use of a weapon, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace while intoxicated.

Sandifer said a Department of Public Safety officer saw Henyard driving erratically on Airline Highway around 10 a.m. Friday. The officer said Henyard got out of the car he was in and started walking down the highway with a gun in his hand, firing several shots into the air.

The DPS officer was transporting an inmate at the time and radioed for assistance, saying the man also tried to carjack another vehicle in the area before walking onto the parking lot of the Exxon Polyolephins Plant on Scenic Highway. Sandifer said Henyard made it into the foyer of the front building at the plant but was stopped by security measures at the plant and detained by authorities.

Plant Manager Angela Zeringue said their active shooter protocols were followed well by their employees and security team, which kept Henyard from gaining access to the plant. She also credited law enforcement for their quick response.

Sandifer said they don't believe the man targeted Exxon, and no officers or Exxon employees were hurt in the incident. Because multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, Sandifer said investigators will take some time to collect all the information and piece it together. He also asked any witnesses to Friday's events to call LSP.

Henyard was taken to Baton Rouge General Hospital as a precautionary measure after the incident and later released, which is when authorities arrested him and booked him into the parish jail.
