Minus Brees, Saints offense shines in preseason win over Rams
ST. LOUIS - The New Orleans Saints got offensive production from a couple of players with something to prove, and backup quarterback Ryan Griffin led the Saints to a 26-24 win in their preseason opener over St. Louis Friday night.
Saints Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees sat out with a strained oblique, but once Griffin subbed in for Luke McCown, the Saints got rolling.
Mark Ingram and Brandin Cooks each scored touchdowns, as the Saints had 375 yards of offense and the Rams missed a 59-yard field goal attempt as time expired to secure the win.
Ingram has struggled to show the consistency in the pros that made him a Heisman trophy winner in college, but he ran for 83 yards on 10 carries in the first half, including a 22 yard score.
Meanwhile, Cooks had 5 catches for 55 yards, including a dazzling catch-and-run in the rookie's first preseason game for the Saints.
New Orleans will play the Tennessee Titans next Friday in New Orleans at 7pm.
