Millions of dollars at stake for Ascension Parish schools
Millions of dollars are at stake for one of the state's top ranking school districts. Voters in Ascension Parish will decide on renewing the tax on Saturday.
The property tax generates more than $6 million for Ascension Parish schools each year. The district uses the money on general operations, such as technology and transportation.
"We call these dollars the dollars that lay the foundation for learning in our schools that teachers can build on," said Superintendent Patrice Pujol.
The tax costs someone who owns a $200,000 home about $90 a year.
"So while it's not a huge impact on any individual homeowner, it certainly is a critical impact on our school system," said Pujol.
