Miller claims SWAC honor for second consecutive week
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second consecutive week, Southern forward Malcolm Miller has been named Southwestern Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week.
The Midland, Texas native had a dominant week in the Jaguars three games, averaging 25.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest. He had 28 points and nine rebounds in Southern's 80-67 win over Jackson State. Then, he came back with a 21-point, nine rebound effort against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in another Jag win (84-50). Miller finished off the week in style, posting a double-double in a 88-54 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Monday. The 6'6 junior posted 28 points and 10 rebounds as Southern capped off a perfect 3-0 week and improved to 6-0 in the SWAC.
For the week, Miller was 29-of-43 (.674) from the field, including an efficient 15-for-21 (.714) from 3-point range. He also was 4-for-5 from the freethrow line.
Overall this season, Miller is ranked in the SWAC top 10 in six different categories.
He leads the SWAC in 3-point percentage, knocking down 50.5% of his attempts. He is second in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game and third in both made 3-pointers (2.9 pg) and fieldgoal percentage (.552).
Miller is currently tied for fifth in steals with 1.6 thefts per game and is ranked 8th in rebounding with 5.8 per contest.
Miller and the Jaguars travel to Alabama for a two-game road swing facing Alabama State Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. before heading north on Interstate 65 to Huntsville, Ala. to play Alabama A&M Jan. 21 at 8:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
