BATON ROUGE- Wednesday, the metro council will vote on increased standards for drainage in new developments. Council members Dwight Hudson and Erika Green purposed the changes.

"There's a balance between protecting the existing homeowners that are out there and making sure we don't do damage to our local economy," Hudson said.

Currently, drainage systems in developments are required to handle a 10-year storm. The proposal increases that to a 25-year storm.

Also, new developments in a floodplain would be required to increase the water storage capacity by ten percent.

If it passes, the standards wouldn't go into effect for six months and it doesn't apply to developments with existing applications.
