BATON ROUGE- Metro Council members were assigned to a committee that will review a police/sheriff merger.

The group's members include: one East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputy, a Baton Rouge Police officer and council members Joel Boe', Tara Wicker and John Delgado.

"This committee will get together and see where are those opportunities that we may be able to save some costs and in addition to that make sure everything is working together efficiently and effectively," said Wicker.

Merging the two agencies would need legislative action and approval from voters.

Boe' believes a decision could be years away.

"I highly doubt that this is going to be a six month process," he said.

Boe' expects the committee to grow to include other agencies and members of the public. He expects to start advertising meetings as early as February.
