NASA says there is ice at Mercury's north pole and that a spacecraft confirmed the finding. The orbiting probe called Messenger found evidence of frozen water, although Mercury is the planet closest to the sun. The ice was found in a permanently shadowed region of the planet's north pole and its thought to be a foot deep and possibly as much as 65 feet deep. Messenger is the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury and it was launched in 2004. Scientists now surmise the planet's south pole also has ice. There's no way to confirm that since Messenger orbits closer to the north pole.
