Mercedes taps Am General for U.S. manufacturing
DETROIT- AM General, the company that makes military and commercial vehicles, was tapped by Mercedes Benz to make its SUV's.
It will make the R-Class which is a seven-seat SUV at its plant in Mishawaka, Indiana. The R-Class is mainly sold in China.
Mercedes moved the assembly line from Tuscaloosa, Alabama to make room for a new SUV, the GLE Coupe.
AM General says it will hire and train several hundred people to make the R-Class. The AM General plant already employs 1,500 and makes a wheelchair-accessible van.
