Memorial planned for slain Ariz. firefighters
BATON ROUGE - State officials scheduled a public memorial for Tuesday in Baton Rouge to honor 19 firefighters killed while fighting a wildfire raging in Arizona.
The State Fire Marshal's Office and Department of Agriculture and Forestry are working with several other firefighting agencies in Louisiana to put the memorial together.
The firefighters died Sunday while battling the Yarnell Hill Fire in Yavapai County, Arizona. They were part of an elite "hotshot" crew who had taken cover when the fire changed direction and overwhelmed them. More than half the crew were in their 20's.
The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Louisiana State Firefighter's Memorial, located on the grounds of the State Fire Marshal's Office in Baton Rouge. The public is invited to attend.
