LAFAYETTE - A Lafayette city-parish program to publicly commend bars that go smoke-free has attracted no interest, prompting the councilman who proposed it to consider town hall meetings on the issue.

Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux proposed the recognition program about a month ago after hearing from residents who hope for a local ban on smoking in bars.

Boudreaux said that if there seems to be no interest on the part of bars, he plans to host a series of town hall meetings on the issue and will begin meeting one-on-one with bar owners.

But the councilman said he is reticent to move forward with any new smoking regulations without careful consideration.

State law prohibits smoking in most businesses, with the exception of gambling establishments and bars.
