Mayor issues budget veto
PORT ALLEN - Mayor Deedy Slaughter vetoed the city's budget today.
Without a signed budget, the city continues to operate under last year's budget.
The Port Allen City Council passed the 2013-2014 budget 3-2 on Oct. 23. It included a substitute amendment which removed several provisions Slaughter pushed for, such as pay raises for city employees making less than $40,000.
Councilwoman Ray Helen Lawrence and Councilman Brandon Brown voted against passing the budget after they say they were not included in the writing of the amendment. However, when council members asked if Brown and Lawrence were included in Slaughter's budget, she refused to answer.
Slaughter previously threatened to veto any budget which passed with an amendment, and had ten days to do so after it was passed.
Slaughter faces a recall election on Nov. 16, and has been the subject of numerous News 2 investigations since she took office.
News 2 will have more on the mayor's decision coming up tonight at 6 and 10.
