Matherne's expanding downtown
BATON ROUGE - Grocery store chain Matherne's is expanding into downtown Baton Rouge, the first of its stores in that area.
The new store is planned for the corner of 3rd and Main, transforming the former Capital One building into a supermarket with apartments above the store.
Within the last year downtown Baton Rouge has been growing with new residential space, stores opening, and more developments expected.
"I think with the grocery moving in with all the residential units that they're building shows that it's growing and it's getting a lot bigger," said downtown resident, Courtney Hunt.
The Matherne's family said they were a little hesitant at first but knew downtown was the place to be. The store will be about 15,000 square feet and resemble the Highland Road location with more features.
Matherne's says its a sign downtown Baton Rouge is on the rise and coming back.
"We think the downtown rejuvenation is ongoing and happening right now. We want to be a part of that. We're excited to be apart of it," said Earnie Matherne.
The store will open next fall and tenants can move into the new housing by early 2015.
