Matherne's Downtown an oasis in a food desert
BATON ROUGE- The new Matherne's Market on 3rd street downtown opened its doors today as eager customers got their first look inside the new supermarket.
"I just kind of jumped up and down like I was at a football game when I saw it was open, because I've been peeking out the window at work to see the building going on and I'm just excited about this," said David Pearce, who works downtown.
The market is still in the process of stocking shelves, but already has the basic staples and a hot plate lunch line open and ready for business.
Some think the store will boost the number of people moving into the downtown area.
"I believe it's definitely a game changer for downtown, I think with the pre-leasing that's going on and the creation of the residential units it's definitely a benefit," said Anthony Gonzalez, who works downtown and is considering moving into a new apartment near the river.
"Prior to the Matherne's coming downtown, I wasn't even considering moving downtown just for convenience, but now that Matherne's is opening I'm considering moving in right here at 447," said Gonzalez.
The store is expected to be fully stocked before the end of the month and will feature everything from a butcher counter to fresh sushi.
