Marine to plead guilty after faking injuries
A Marine sergeant from Springhill, La. will plead guilty to faking battle injuries to get freebies intended for wounded troops.
Prosecutors say Sgt. David Budwah bluffed his way into 33 events last year, including rock concerts, two Washington Nationals baseball games and a Washington Redskins football game.
Several of the events included special recognition of injured service members in attendance.
Budwah is also accused of wearing eight unearned medals and decorations on his uniform, including bronze-star campaign medals from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He claimed to have been wounded in Afghanistan when he dove on a homemade grenade to shield a friend, but the government says he never served there and was never injured.
Budwah faces eight counts, including making false official statements, malingering, misconduct and larceny. They carry combined penalties of more than 31 years in prison and a dishonorable discharge.
