PLAQUEMINE - A state judge has sentenced a 27-year-old man to 40 years for shooting and killing a man at a Mardi Gras parade in 2012.

Iberville Parish District Attorney Ricky Ward said Akeem Gailes, of Plaquemine, was sentenced by state District Judge William Dupont on Thursday.

A jury convicted Gailes on June 7 of killing 27-year-old DeWayne Milton Smith, of White Castle. Authorities say Gailes shot Smith when the two got into an argument at the Plaquemine Community Parade on Feb. 19, 2012.

The judge also sentenced Gailes to 20 years for felony gun possession.

The District Attorney's Office requested Gailes serve the two sentences consecutively, but Dupont ordered the sentences be served concurrently.
