OPELOUSAS - Residents in some areas of St. Landry Parish are being told to evacuate by the parish president.

President Don Menard put out a mandatory evacuation order for all residents in the Basin south of LA 190 to be out of the area by 5 p.m. Sunday. This includes the Three Mile Lake area, North Wilderness Road area and the east side of the river levee.

The mandatory evacuation is not for people living in the ring levee of Krotz Springs and Melville.

A voluntary evacuation is also being issued to all other residents living in the Basin area north of Highway 190. President Menard said they highly encourage people there to evacuate.

People evacuating need to shut off the main power breaker to their home, and close all private water wells. If you have pets, be sure to have a pet carrier, vaccination records, food and medicine for them.

People that need help with transportation or medical transportation should call the parish Emergency Operations Center. The pickup sites are:

Nall Park in Krotz Springs - 2:30 p.m. pickup time
Prudhomme's Bait Show on Hwy 190 - 3 p.m. pickup time

The St. Landry Parish School Board has offered the parking lots of Melville Elementary, Morrow Elementary and Palmetto Elementary to store large equipment such as boats, campers, farm equipment, etc. People who plan to store such equipment should also call the EOC before going.

The EOC will answer questions about those and any other issues between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. You can reach them at (337) 948-7177.
