Man wanted in donut shop smash-and-grab
BATON ROUGE - Sheriff's deputies in East Baton Rouge Parish asked for the public's help Tuesday in finding a man who busted windows of multiple stores and ended up stealing a cash register.
Deputies said they were dispatched to the Mary Lee's Donuts on Greenwell Springs Road shortly after midnight early Tuesday morning to find the front window of the shop smashed and the cash register missing. The crook also smashed caused damage to Jerry Lee's Cajun Foods next door.
"You know it's sickening. We wake up every morning and come to work for an honest living," said Jerry Lee Duplantis Jr. "We have a steady group of costumers who come in here who we try to provide a good product for and then somebody tries to take it from you when you're not here."
Business owners say the thief caused around $2,500 in damage to the store fronts while making off with about $90 in cash from the register.
"It seems like a pretty desperate thing for somebody to have to do," said Duplantis. "You're mad but at the same time you feel sorry for him, and I don't know."
After reviewing security camera footage, deputies described the suspect as a man with a medium build and dark colored hair. He was wearing a camouflage jacket, dark jeans and dark shoes during the theft. The suspect arrived at and left the scene in a single cab truck, according to investigators.
Anyone with any information on the identity of the suspect is urged to contacted the BRPD Armed Robbery Division at (225) 389-3845.
