GONZALES - One man is in custody after shooting another man multiple times during a fundraiser at Gonzales' Municipal Park Sunday.

Police say 31-year-old Melvin Sanders, originally a person of interest in the case, shot a man several times at the non-permitted fundraiser in Gonzales.

The Gonzalez Police Department was dispatched to the park after receiving reports of shots fired around 6 p.m. Sunday afternoon. There, police discovered that the victim, 26-year-old Jonathan Harvey, got into an altercation with Sanders and one other person. Police say the fight escalated and Harvey was shot at least six times.

According to the Gonzales Police Department, the fundraiser was being held to assist with funeral expenses for Jonathan's brother, Clarence Harvey, the victim of a fatal shooting in Ascension Parish last week.

Harvey was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital by a private vehicle before officers arrived on the scene. He has since been transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, where he awaited surgery in critical condition.

As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, Harvey has undergone surgery and is in stable condition, police say.

Sanders was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm.
