BATON ROUGE - State Police took over the investigation into a deadly deputy-involved shooting that happened overnight Tuesday.

Deputies opened fire on a suspect around 10 p.m. Tuesday, killing 48-year-old Travis Stevenson in a vehicle.  Shots were fired when the suspect started ramming sheriff's office cruisers and attempted to drive a vehicle into a building.  The deputies feared for their lives, the Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said in a late-night news conference at the scene.  Six deputies were involved in the situation, he said.

Investigators said Stevenson was pronounced dead on the scene.

However, Gautreaux said the incident started when a woman reported the suspect, who was her ex-boyfriend, sprayed her and her daughter with pepper spray in the Gardere area.  Subsequent conversations with the suspect eluded to him being suicidal and perhaps trying to jump from one of the two bridges over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge.  After checking the bridges, deputies found the man near the corner of Eddie Robinson and Terrace where, they say he became violent toward deputies and they opened fire. 

According to EBRSO, detectives involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave following the incident, which is standard procedure.
