Man pleads guilty to slitting 2-year-old son's throat
NEW ORLEANS - A 26-year-old New Orleans man has pleaded guilty to capital murder, admitting that he slit his 2-year-old son's throat to avoid paying $4,000 in overdue child support.
The Times-Picayune reports Danny Platt was sentenced to life in prison Thursday. The only promise prosecutor Robert Moore made him was that the state would not seek to execute him.
Ja'Shawn Powell's body was found in a gym bag on Jan. 2, 2009, near a playground.
The coroner said his throat had been slashed and he bled to death.
Platt reportedly told police first that kidnappers wielding assault rifles snatched the boy on a street corner, but later confessed to the killing.
