Update: Deputies are fairly certain about what happened, but family and friends may never know why 39-year-old Joseph Shaffett wanted to kill his family.

It happened at Shaffet's home on king George Bay Road in Livingston, La. According to a family friend, who asked not be identified, Shaffett called his mother-in-law and was threatening to kill his wife, Courtney, and 5-year-old son.

Before deputies could arrive to the scene, Shaffett had already shot his wife and child and then himself. News 2 has learned the couple was separated and considering a divorce.

Deputies are working to find out if that may have been the trigger that set Shaffett off. The family friend also told News 2 that Shaffett had threatened to kill the couples' 9-year-old son when he got off the bus from school.

Family members were able to stop the bus before the 9-year-old made it home.
